Parents and Guardians, 

During this school closure, I will continue to provide counseling services to your child.  I am available to listen and to encourage each student to prosper as he/she completes the year.  With the intentions to assist your child to the next grade-level, I will be collaborating with administrators and teachers about his/her academics and behavior.  I encourage you to continue to monitor your child's learning as W.E.A. staff makes every effort to meet your child's academic needs. 

As well as the teachers, I am making individual phone calls to parents and students in order to check the status of students' academic and social needs.  My new office hours are on Mondays to Thursdays from 1:00 P.M. to 3:OO P.M.  I can be reached by email at sreed@bhm.k12.al.us.  If you need to talk with me, please leave your name and phone number in an email.  I will return your call.  If you have a "true emergency", please call or visit your child's doctor or the hospital emergency department; you can inform me about this situation at a later time. I have included a few resources for community counseling services:  UAB Children's Hospital (205-638-9100), Grandview Medical Center (205-971-1000), and National Suicide Prevention Hotline (1-800-273-8255). Assignment:  Parents, I need kindergartens, first and second graders to draw a picture about what they are doing while being away from school. I am expecting third, fourth, and fifth graders to write a poem or story about what they are doing while they are not in their regular classrooms.  This is a FUN activity that students can share with me through my email or during my follow-up phone calls. I look forward to hearing from you. (This is my poem to W.E.A. students.)

Learning the new way is going to take time,

But remember to let your little light shine.

This may sound like a cliche,

But don't let your time be all child's play.

Showing teachers your mean academic skills

Is easier than practicing---the school fire drill.

Wake up and get dressed in your pants or skirt.

It's time to get busy with the West End work.

Just marking answers can be a mistake.

That's your warning to take a very short break.

Don't break too long and NOT finish the work

Because getting behind will cause your hurt.

Thinking the right thing is in your heart.

Doing the right thing is because you're smart.

ASSIGNMENT:  This is a fun activity for kindergartens through 5th graders. Without leaving your home, participate in a scavenger hunt. Ask your parent/guardian, a sister, a brother, or another individual to join you in this activity. As for kindergartens, search and collect a yellow crayon, a black sock, a picture with yellow in it, and a favorite book. See how fast you and the other person can collect these items. Your last task is to read your book to someone in your home. You can email me and let me know how much fun you had in this scavenger hunt. As for 1st through 5th graders, you will also need to participate. You can challenge yourself and/or someone in your home. Your tasks are to collect a 1996 quarter, a 1984 penny, a beautiful picture of your family, a funny picture of yourself, and your favorite book. Time yourself and the other individual in your home. Your final task is to tell me about your favorite book that you read; I will be waiting for your email. Have Fun!! 

ASSIGNMENT:  All W.E.A. Students, it's time to review your Character Education words. If you need assistance, you can ask your parent or guardian to assist you. Email me the meaning of each word and three (3) examples when you performed these character education words since we have been away from our school. These words are Responsibility, Respect, and Trustworthy. I look forward to your responses! Email me this week.
