Dear Bush Hills Steam Academy Community and School Family,
It warms my heart to be appointed as the new principal of Bush Hills Steam Academy. I believe that my leadership, classroom, program experience, and dedication to excellence in education, are well suited to leading our scholars and making sure they are ready for a competitive global society. Most importantly, I am committed to building and fostering relationships with the staff, students, parents, stakeholders, and the community to improve academic achievement levels, in addition to creating student learning environments with a focus on inquiry-based learning, problem solving, and critical thinking at Bush Hills Steam Academy.
I am an accomplished 17-year veteran educator with a history of using data and research-based instructional techniques to drive student achievement. Most recently, I received my doctorate in educational leadership and urban education and am ready to take on a larger role as principal in meeting the variety of needs of children at Bush Hills Steam Academy.
Some of my notable highlighted professional achievements at Birmingham City School include, but are not limited to: I successfully implemented a PBIS Program that was recognized by the district for the years that I served as the lead facilitator; science students scored at or above district proficiency on the science summative assessment, which was 57% or higher; coached teachers on best practices to reduce referrals to the Problem-Solving Team, reduced chronic absenteeism by 7% or more on the state report card for three consecutive years; oversaw the Brain Forest Project Based Learning Program as the Instructional Director for three years where students grew an average of 3-4 months in the summer according to STAR Data; and created partnerships with businesses to help support students, professional development, and extracurricular activities.
Prior to becoming the new principal at Bush Hills STEAM Academy, I served as the Interim Principal at Wilkerson Middle School and the assistant principal at Jones Valley Middle School for three years. As the assistant principal, I was responsible for making sure that the teachers were implementing effective research-based instructional strategies, restorative justice practices, blended learning, high-impact collaboration, and student engagement activities. Moreover, I pride myself on being able to share best practices with my colleagues through professional development opportunities and as part of several school-based committees.
As an instructional leader throughout my years within Birmingham City Schools, I continue to use student data to target areas of deficiency and employ nationally recognized, research-based strategies to help coach teachers and increase student mastery. Furthermore, I am enthusiastic about continuing my career and lending my skills and expertise to the wonderful staff at Bush Hills Steam Academy. I look forward to meeting with you and learning more about how I can help Bush Hills Steam Academy become a high-performing middle school.
