Huffman Academy plaque

Huffman Academy opened in August of 2011 as a Pre-K through 5th grade elementary school. The school is located on the northeastern side of Birmingham, Alabama. The campus sits less than .5 miles off Parkway East. The school was built on the old site of the Wright Elementary School campus and combined students/faculty of Arthur, Going, and Wright Elementary Schools when it opened.

The school is in a multicultural neighborhood of single family homes and several apartment complexes. Huffman Academy is a Title I school with an enrollment of approximately 807 students in grades Pre-K through 5th grade. Because we serve students in a predominately low income area, our school qualifies for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the federal Child Nutrition Program which allows us to serve free breakfast and lunch to all our students. The current population of Hispanic students has stayed consistent at 9% of our total student body.

The school is located in the Huffman community, situated off main roads and is surrounded by single family homes. The campus has a creek located just off the school property to the east side of the building. The campus is completely encircled with a fence and gates that are locked at the only two entrances to the property when school is not in session. The neighborhoods that surround Huffman Academy are: Huffman, Killough Springs, Liberty Highlands, and Spring Lake.

There are five Birmingham City School buses that drop off and pick up at Huffman Academy, along with approximately 20 private daycare vans and over 140 personal cars. There are many students that walk to and from school. The Birmingham City School district operates an after school care program at the school.

There are 53 faculty members at the school including 38 classroom teachers, 4 special education teachers, 1 part-time EL teacher, 1 part-time Interventionist, 1 Early Literacy Coach, 3 P.E. teachers, 1.5 Counselors, and one each: Art, General Music, Library, and Technology. Our support staff totals 12 and is comprised of 3 clerical workers, 1 full-time nurse, 4 custodians, and 6 CNP personnel, along with a part time ESL paraprofessional and one special education paraprofessional. There is one principal and two assistant principals leading the school programs. We also receive itinerant Speech, Occupational Therapy and Gifted services.
