Dear Huffman Middle School,

My name is Genita Matthews and I am so excited to introduce myself to you as the new Principal of Huffman Middle School. I am a product of the Birmingham City School System, which strives to achieve academic excellence for all students. Over the past 19 years, I have worked as a teacher and as an administrator, but I consider my most important job to be that of a child advocate. I will spend most of my time with the students, getting to know their personalities, learning styles, and interests. I will celebrate their successes, small and large. I will encourage them every day and let them know they are valued and have a special place in our school community. I will strive to accomplish the mission and to achieve the vision from the previous administration by taking it to the next level of success.

Not only am I excited to begin working with the students, but I look forward to the work we will do together. As the old Proverb states, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I cannot wait for us to discuss about the great things our students will do throughout their days here at Huffman Middle School. I will also dedicate time to work with all faculty and staff to help meet the needs of the students academically, emotionally, socially, and physically. Lastly, I will be here to work with all stakeholders to continue to grow professionally.

My goal is to ensure that all children are healthy, happy and safe, so they may learn as much as they can. Another one of my goals is to be a servant leader to the faculty and staff of Huffman Middle School.  This has been my philosophy since I began my career teaching in the Birmingham City School System. I worked at Wenonah High School where I taught mathematics for 7 years. I also served as the Assistant Principal for 8 years. Within this capacity, I facilitated professional development and parent workshops, disciplined students, worked with Title I, and directed the Hospitality and Tourism Academy. I then became the Principal at Bush K-8 School in the summer of 2013 where I have been, until this current reassignment to Huffman Middle School.

I feel as though my greatest achievement comes not professionally, but personally, as I am a wife of a devoted husband, a mother of three beautiful children and a grandmother of one.  My goal is to treat all students in our school as if they were my own. Please know I will work tirelessly to ensure all of our students have the best possible experiences while at Huffman Middle School.

Once again, I am so thankful to have the opportunity to bring all that I have experienced and learned with me to this wonderful community. I look forward to getting to know you. We will have a great year!
