Birmingham City Schools hosted its annual June Tunes concert today at G.W. Carver High School. The concert featured scholars from as many as 17 BCS schools including Central Park and Woodlawn. The performance is a part of the wrap-up of the annual camp produced by the BCS Arts Education Department.
“The camp started in 1997,” said Dr. Debora Mayes, Director of the Arts Education Department. “The more the scholars come and hone their skills during the summer, they are able to increase their chances of scholarship offers.”
The ensemble also featured BCS alumni including Dr. Willie Snipes, Jr., the current band director at Miles College. The musical arrangements included classics like “I feel Good” by James Brown to current hits in “Million Dollar Baby” by Tommy Richman.
