SGA

Mission

The mission of John Herbert Phillips Academy's Student Government Association (SGA) is where students gather to share thoughts and ideas to present to teachers and administrators to effect change. We are vested in ensuring all students have a voice as individual students or as a collective body.

Vision

The Vision of John Herbert Phillips Academy's Student Government Association (SGA) is to foster a student-led system of representation, where students know they are valued, have a voice, and are represented in the decision-making process and will also be exposed to government/decision-making process.

Presidential Debate

JHPA has pioneered and hosted SGA Presidental debates for the past 3 years.  Presidential candidates participate in JHPA's SGA Presidential Debate.  Students use this forum to convince the voting grades on why they are the best choice to represent them.  Students will answer questions based on personal, local, national, and global context issues.  Their answers should reflect ability to process, articulate, and demonstrate convincing arguments for their electability.

Expectations for Students

JHPA’s SGA elected members are expected to be the epitome of academic and behavior excellence. We hold our representatives to the highest ideals of our specialty school agreement. The President and VPs are expected to:

  • Maintain an AB Honor –Roll all 9-weeks.

  • Conduct themselves as role-models at all times.

  • Participate in other extra-curricular activities.

  • Perform community service with the governing body.

  • Reflect all IB principles and attitudes.

Expectations for Parents

JHPA’s SGA parents will support their scholars in all school and SGA activities. These activities could be in the form of chaperone for events, sponsorship events, and donation to the organization.
