Dr. Antonia Ishman

Teaching is a passion that runs deep in the soul.  Dr. Ishman's career path in education began early in her teenage years and has spanned over twenty years with the Birmingham City Schools.  These years provided many experiences, such as classroom teacher, reading coach, curriculum writer, assistant principal, and now principal.  As a teacher, she worked hard to teach young minds and share the love of learning.  Soon, it was realized that being a classroom teacher was more than just presenting lessons.  It took creating a classroom community, listening to the interests of students, and partnering with peers, parents, and the community. After eight years of teaching, Dr. Ishman earned the distinction of being a National Board Certified Teacher.   She was appointed the principal of Booker T. Washington K-8 July 2016.  Dr. Ishman cherishes her current role as principal of Booker T. Washington and works to exhibit servant leadership.  A saying goes that people do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.   She shows her caring attitude to teachers, students, and parents daily as she visits classrooms, facilitates student clubs, and collaborates with teachers and parents about student learning.
