Academics and Accountability

Welcome to Birmingham City Schools’ Department of Curriculum, and Instruction.  We are committed to high student achievement, exceptional student performance, and continuous student growth for the more than 22,000 students that we serve each day. With focus on our mission “to guide all students to achieve excellence in a safe, secure and nurturing environment”, we are using rigorous curriculum, best practices, data-driven decisions and shared accountability to ensure that each and every student is college, career and life ready.

Under the leadership of the Chief Academic Officer, the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment oversees a number of critical areas including teaching and learning, federal programs, special education, Pre-K, AmeriCorp, foreign language and virtual learning.  These areas operate collectively and collaboratively to ensure that teaching and learning is supported and enhanced at the highest level, and that student achievement is at the center of all that we do.
