Staff Achievements Recognized During December Board Meeting

Each month, the Birmingham Board of Education recognizes the employees who go above and beyond the call of duty to make the district a better place, even when no one is looking.

These employees are critical to establishing and maintaining a positive culture and a safe, secure, and nurturing learning environment. They inspire their colleagues and our students to pursue excellence, serve others, and collaborate effectively towards common goals.

During its regularly scheduled meeting on Dec. 10, the board recognized the following:

Nicolette Monroe

Special Education Collaborative

Dupuy Alternative School

Nicollette has shown great patience and diligence as she works with our students. Recently, she has taken on the responsibility to improve our culture and climate by hosting faculty events and activities. She has also helped us start our school garden that we use to help rehabilitate our students. She spends time researching how different plants grow and how they are harvested. She has helped the students plant collard greens, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce and more.

Alisha Walker

History Teacher

Dupuy Alternative School

Miss Walker has been great at exposing our students to expanding the lessons beyond the classroom. She has taken the students on two field trips- 1 to botanical gardens to study plant life and 1 to Miles College and Lawson State. After the trip to Botanical Gardens, she obtained a mini-grant from the Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation to help us expand our garden. This garden is a part of our rehabilitation, restoration and renewal program.

Gregory Sawyer

Security Officer

Officer Sawyer is one of our most humble and considerate officers in the department. Officer Sawyer thinks of others without hesitation and does it with a smile. When our shift gets together and fellowships a lot of the time there's food left over and instead of throwing it out Officer Sawyer will pack it up and take it downtown to the homeless so at least one night they are not hungry. Humble is it. All in all a good guy and a pleasure to be called our coworker.
