Volunteering opportunities

Teen volunteerism is important in ensuring that students are well-rounded. Students often need documented volunteer hours when applying for scholarships, internships, and leadership programs. These opportunities have been made available by outside organizations and may not be affiliated with Birmingham City Schools. American Red Cross

Red Cross youth volunteers learn valuable lessons in how to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, mobilize communities and create positive change. They hone their leadership skills, make new friends, and explore new interests, all in a friendly, encouraging and age-appropriate environment with visible results. Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank

Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank seeks to ensure that families experiencing hardship have an adequate and reliable supply of diapers for their infants and toddlers in Birmingham and surrounding areas, while engaging the community and raising awareness for diaper need. Saturday bundling opportunities take place at 1430 Reverend Abraham Woods, Jr., Blvd. Volunteers may be asked to bundle diapers, fill orders for partner agencies, and/or organize warehouse inventory. Grace Klein Community

Grace Klein Community seeks to unite diverse entities together by sharing what they have in order to meet the needs of others. There are countless volunteer opportunities. McWane Science Center

McWane Science Center's Teen Volunteer Program offers year-round volunteer opportunities for teens who are interested in giving back, learning something new, and being part of an incredible team of young people. Red Mountain Theatre Company

RMT strives to create powerful theatre experiences that enrich, educate, and engage audiences. Our passionate volunteers donate their time and energy to create memorable experiences for every guest. Be a part of RMT and give back to community, make new friends, and have the opportunity to attend outstanding professional theatre at our Arts Campus. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama joins and aids families in their efforts to find hope, support, happiness, and growth. This facility provides resources to families from across the United States and all over the world who are seeking life-saving treatments for their critically ill children. There are multiple opportunities for volunteerism. Students may volunteer in groups but all individual volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Students who are rising juniors or seniors in high school may apply for participation in the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama Student Leadership Council (SLC). This group of young men and women are committed to promoting volunteerism by serving the families staying at Ronald McDonald House of Birmingham, Alabama. Students who are selected for this opportunity will have the opportunity to develop self-confidence and leadership skills while engaging in age-appropriate activities designed to meet the unique needs of our community. Sidewalk Youth Board

Calling all high school filmmakers! The Sidewalk Youth Board application is now available. The Youth Board is a group of high school students from across the Birmingham area who meet throughout the school year who share their love for movies. The Youth Board writes, produces, directs, edits, and eventually screens their own short film. Special Equestrians

The mission of Special Equestrians is to enrich the lives of people with physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges by encouraging their connection to horses. The goal is to increase independence and quality of life for riders by providing fun and safe activities. Volunteers must be 14 and older to participate.  United Ability

The Giving is Good (GIG) program is open to students from 8th - 12th grades who are comfortable working with children under the age of 5; comfortable interacting with children with disabilities; who are responsible and reliable; and who want to learn about helping children with different levels of abilities. This opportunity is only for summer programs and applicants must submit recommendations. To learn more, visit United Ability.

YouthServe

The Youth Action Council (YAC) unites service-minded youth from across the Birmingham metro region and gives them the space to learn and serve together. YAC is comprised of student leaders ages 13 - 18 who are dedicated to their efforts to address needs in the Birmingham community. Throughout the year, YAC members meet to develop solutions to these issues through the implementation of service projects. YouthServe also hosts monthly community service days that are open to all young people aged 13 - 18 across the Birmingham metro region. Typically held on Saturdays, service days are an opportunity for youth to learn about the important work of local nonprofits while engaging in impactful service with their peers.
