South Hampton Hygiene Hub

Students at South Hampton K-8 continue to earn accolades for their innovative STEM projects.

The team has been selected as the state winner for Alabama in the 2024-25 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition.

Their project is Hygiene Hub, which upcycles donated clothing into sustainable hygiene products and diapers. The team received $12,000 and will advance to the National Finalist competition for a chance to win $100,000.

The students have previously won $10,000 in the Altec Innovation Challenge for a variation of this project also called Hygiene Hub, a vending machine for donated hygiene products.

The next step for the team is to create a three-minute video to show case their project.

“Solve for Tomorrow was born from Samsung’s deep belief in the power of STEM to improve lives and transform communities. It’s truly inspiring to see these bright Gen Z and Gen Alpha innovators harnessing emerging technologies, with nearly half of their STEM solutions incorporating AI, to address critical societal issues with creativity, determination, and purpose,” said Allison Stransky, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung Electronics America.

Last year, the Academy of Engineering at G.W. Carver High School also won at the state round of the competition and advanced to the national round. Bush Hills STEAM Academy and Wilkerson Middle School were state finalists in the 2022-23 edition. Visit Samsung's website for more details on the competition.
