Each month, the Birmingham Board of Education the board also recognizes the employees who go above and beyond the call of duty to make the district a better place, even when no one is looking.

These employees are critical to establishing and maintaining a positive culture and a safe, secure, and nurturing learning environment. They inspire their colleagues and our students to pursue excellence, serve others, and collaborate effectively towards common goals.

This month, the board recognized Jonathan Hatten, History Department Chair at Ramsay High School, IB World Studies.

A dedicated educator, mentor, and leader who consistently goes above and beyond to support the Ramsay High School, Mr. Hatten inspires students to excel academically and personally. Beyond the classroom, he serves as a male mentor and leader of "Manhood Monday," providing young men with guidance and support.

He also makes multifaceted contributions to the school as the Educational Technology Specialist, New Literacies Presenter, Partnership Liaison, and Common Ground Liaison. As Department Chair, he leads and manages classes when substitutes are unavailable. Additionally, he leads the Sunshine Club, providing comfort and empathy to faculty members experiencing loss.

“Perhaps what stands out most about Mr. Hatten is his cheerful disposition and willingness to assist wherever needed. He embodies the spirit of service, never hesitating to take on additional responsibilities to support the school community. His enthusiasm, kindness, and unwavering commitment to excellence make him an invaluable asset to Ramsay High School, IB World Studies,” said Dr. Carolyn Walker, Principal of Ramsay High School.
