Each month, the Birmingham Board of Education recognizes the employees who go above and beyond the call of duty to make the district a better place, even when no one is looking.

These employees are critical to establishing and maintaining a positive culture and a safe, secure, and nurturing learning environment. They inspire their colleagues and our students to pursue excellence, serve others, and collaborate effectively towards common goals.

During its regularly scheduled meeting on March 11, the board recognized the following:

Maria DeJesús-Pagán

Spanish Teacher

P.D. Jackson-Olin High School

A veteran Spanish teacher, Maria DeJesús-Pagán was recognized for her outstanding contributions not only as an exceptional education but also for her role as an advocate for Hispanic students the P.D. Jackson-Olin High School community.

“Maria has consistently demonstrated excellence in her role as an educator. Her ability to create engaging and meaningful lessons captivates students and instills a lifelong appreciation for the Spanish language and culture. Her classroom is a vibrant hub of learning where students feel empowered to explore, grow, and excel,” said Jesse Daniels, Principal of P.D. Jackson-Olin High School.

In addition to her role as a teacher, Daniels cited Dejesús-Pagán for fostering a culture of inclusivity and cultural awareness by raising awareness of the struggles of second-language learners, offering professional development sessions for colleagues, and serving as a trusted translator and mediator for Hispanic students.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have Maria as part of our team. Her dedication, compassion, and expertise profoundly impact not only her students but also the entire school community. She embodies the values of excellence, inclusivity, and service, setting an inspiring example for all,” he said. “She is a cornerstone of our school, and we are honored to work alongside her.”

Dr. Willie Goldsmith

Principal

Wenonah High School

Wenonah Principal Dr. Willie Goldsmith was “caught doing good” last month during the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) 5A Girls Northeast Basketball Regionals, held at Jacksonville State University.

Kim Vickers, Associate Executive Director for AHSAA, commended Dr. Goldsmith and his administrative staff for the school’s “display of community support and service.”

“Requesting trash bags so your students could pick up and dispose of their trash was the epitome of respect for others and service to the community,” said Vickers. “Your student section was ‘spotless’ when you left this afternoon. Winning two basketball games this morning was impressive, but the life lessons those students are learning from Wenonah High School's leadership will last a lifetime.”

Accepting on behalf of Dr. Goldsmith were Assistant Principals Sandra Jackson and Jerry Davenport.
